چکیده

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, henceforth (PTCA) for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI)—a high-tech treatment—is more frequently used in Japan than in other developed countries. This paper adopts the two-phase model to examine whether the high PTCA use is driven by the self-interest of physicians, or by behavioral character. After controlling for a patient’s detailed characteristics, we found that increases in the relative numbers of hospitals and physicians are significantly related to physician-initiated expenditures and the effect is higher for high-tech treatments. The results based on municipal-level aggregated data also support this conclusion. JEL classification: I11

Right Regional Variations in Medical Expenditure and Hospitalization Days for Heart Attack Patients in Japan: Evidence from the Tokai Acute Myocardial Study (TAMIS) by

The use of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), a costly high-tech treatment for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), is much more frequent in Japan than in other developed countries, resulting in large medical expenditure. Using chart-based data from the Tokai Acute Myocardial Infarction Study (TAMIS) and exploiting regional variations, we explore what factors exp...

Effects of histidine and vitamin C on isoproterenol-induced acute myocardial infarction in rats

In the present study, we investigated the effects of histidine and vitamin C (alone or in combination) treatments against isoproterenol (a β-adrenergic receptor agonist)-induced acute myocardial infarction in rats. We used propranolol (a β-adrenergic receptor blocker) to compare the results. Rats were given intraperitoneal injections of histidine (40 mg kg-1) and vitamin C (40 mg kg<...

Prediction of long-term cardiac events by 123I-MIBG imaging after acute myocardial infarction and reperfusion therapy

Objective(s): In heart failure, the heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratio of the delayed image and washout rate (WR) are well-known as a powerful cardiac event predictors. H/M ratio quantifies the accumulation rate of MIBG in the myocardium and WR quantifies reduction of meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) accumulation in the heart from the early planar image to the delayed pla...
